AUG 2 - 2006

OK - Here's what we're doing about the new No Smoking Law that's gone into effect around the state.  I'll keep this short and sweet, y'all

STICKY FINGERZ

The "Sticky Fingerz" side is officially NON-SMOKING.  This is the side where the bands play.  This is also the side that had previously been the smoking side during lunchtime.  Now it will be NONSMOKING.

What does that mean for you??  Being able to come see your favorite band, and not having to smell like a bar after you leave.  It also allows us to work with some bands that may have members under the age of 21.

The side we call "The Lyric Lounge" is now a real lounge.  A SMOKING lounge for people 21 and up.  With the garage doors opening up to Clinton Ave on one full side of our building, we feel confident that the Lounge will remain your comfortable hangout.

So, Stickyz is able to offer something for all of our customers...Smoking and Non.

RUMBA!

Rumba! Mexi-Cuban Kitchen has been non-smoking from day one.  HOWEVER, the patio at Rumba! is a terrific place to catch a smoke and watch the Arkansas River and Riverfront park.

The Rev Room

Revolution is NONSMOKING.  We are working on a cool idea for a smoker's porch, but for now you guys will have to jump outside or hit the patio at Rumba!

In any event, RUMBA-REVOLUTION has got a place for you to SMOKE.

I guess I just wanted to make that clear b/c there seems to be a lot of confusion, and I wanted you guys to hear it straight from us.  Of course, this is new territory for us, too.  So please bear with us as we try to make the best decisions to keep you guys happy.

May 1 - 2006

I'm no soothsayer, or great predictor or the future, but I totally believe that Internet TV is going to be our future.  Why'm I talkin' about this here?  B/C last night I stayed up until 3am watching Coachella live on AT&T/Yahoo.  Some of you may remember me talking about watching ACL live the same way last September.  It's just the coolest thing ever.  They give you the feeds that you would see on the big screen if you were at the actual show.  It's like having a front row seat.  I strongly suggest keeping an eyeout for the next time they broadcast one of these monster shows over the web.  I sat in front of the screen and watched Devandra Banhart literally blow it up like something straight out of Woodstock.  Then, The Yeah Yeah Yeah's come out and Karen O proves why she is the most dynamite frontchick around - all swagger and style.  Also caught sets by Sleater-Kinney, The Like (who we LOVE for playing at Stickyz), The Go! Team, and stellastarr*.  Definitely cool to sit at home and watch this stream on in...next year, I'm having a Coachella party!!

Still can't stop lovin' the new Prince record...here's my favorite lyric of the year so far (and only Prince could pull this off)

"I gotta brand new dance,

and it's called the (sniff), UH!"

Speaking of Internet Tv, check out what's happening over at www.spotlighton.tv.  These guys and girls are goin' all out on the ITV wagon, and they are still producing a great live music show.  You can catch a few acts that have played at Sticky Fingerz recently (such as The Codetalkers, Jimbo Mathus, and Vaeda).  It's pretty cool.

Also, we will be involved in the filming of a documentary on Max Recordings, and the Little Rock music scene this Friday night.  Perfect timing since we will be celebrating the Max Recordings label's 5 year anniversary with performances by Big Silver, Kevin Kerby, and American Princes.  Oh, it's also Cinco de Mayo or something like that...ha ha.

I really don't use LOL, I'm still more of a "ha ha" guy.

OK, I gotta run.  Did I mention we're only a few weeks out from opening Rumba/Revolution?

April 23 - 2006

I don't know what happened, but all of the sudden it's 2006.  I know this for a fact b/c I just wrote a check to someone earlier today for something that will go into Rev Room.

What's that?  You don't know about Rumba and Revolution?  That's probably got something to do with the facat that I haven't blogged since early October.  there's a reason for this you see...

Right around Halloween of last year, Suzon and I got word that our friends up the street at Coconut Bay were ready to get out of their lease.

"Interesting," we thought.  Just about 2 years earlier we had looked at the spot after Banana Joe's notorious crash and burn.  The corner had always appealed to us, AND we were looking to do something new...just weren't sure exactly which direction we were willing to go.

Fast forward to now>>and we're just a few weeks away from opening not one, but TWO new businesses just up the street from our beloved Chicken Shack.

ok, to be fair...a lot of fun stuff has happened along the way, and I'd crazy not to mention seeing carly simon, u2 (2nd time this tour), the stones (great night for little rock), the cmt awards in nashville (thanks, rob and the whole fisher clan), cuba (from a distance on a wild cruise with some new friends), the bears/packers on the coldest day I want to remember (thanks, dad), vegas (nothing happened, I swear!!), a run up to branson to see jim stafford (thanks, al), a surprise xbox360 (thanks, mom) and a quick trip to the closing of my 2nd favorite restaurant of all time (fairwell, the Berghoff).

So, what can I tell you about the new places?  Not too much today.  What I really want to talk about is...

How awesome was John Lee Hooker, JR last night?  Seriously, y'all.  Boom Boom Boom Boom, Hooker was in the room.  It was so much better than I could've ever expected.  He will defintely be back before the end of the year - you gotta see him and his snakeskin boots!

Have you gotten a chance to hear the Arctic Monkeys yet?  What a great record they've got out.  As fresh and hook-heavy as anything I remember hearing in the the past couple of years.  Maybe The Libertines or Franz Ferdinand come to mind, but The Monkeys are doing it their own way.  If you like Brit-Rock, then you need to get hip to this, man.

Has anyone picked up the new Prince c.d.?  it's totally badass.  This is the record I've been waiting for forever (it seems).  I mean, first of all - who doesn't love Prince?  But we've all been waiting for a good album for YEARS!!  This is it.  I've listened to it 25 or 30 times now, and I believe it is right up there with some of his best work.  Leaner than the "Symbol" album (the one with "7", "My Name is Prince", and "Sexy MF"), funkier than "Diamonds and Pearls" (the one with "Cream", "Gett Off", and the title track), not quite as solid as "1999" or "Purple Rain" or "Sign of the Times", but this is the album that COULD have been the next album after "Purple Rain" instead of freaking everyone out with "Around the World in a Day".

Speaking of "Around the World in a Day" - it came out on May 1 1995.  I remember this b/c my girfriend at the time bought it for me the day that it came out, and that night we watched the making of "We Are the World" on ABC at her parents house.  (I only bring it up b/c when I wrote today's date at the top of the blog, I remembered that it was her birthday and EVERYONE remember's their first g-friend/b-friend's b-day!)

Anyway...I've got a long tradition of buy a Prince album the first day that it comes out.  And year after year - I find myself a little more disappointed with being a major Prince fan.  this one has changed it all back.  I even re-joined the Prince fanclub in hopes of getting the lead on tickets to the upcoming tour.  The new album rocks!

But enough abou Prince - let's talk about Sticky Fingerz.  We're gearing up for a cool summer.  It's our 6th anniversary, and we're planning on some great things.  Suzon won't really let me talk about them just yet, but we've got a few plans that I think you guys are really going to love.

In the meantime - Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner.  We've got a double celebration thing ahpenin' with the district-wide "Running of the Bars" in the streets of the River Market, AND Max recordings 5 year anniversary with Kevin Kerby, American Princes, and Big Silver.  Also on the same weekend, we've got the killer "Queen" tribute act.  Queen rules.

Also, new dates are up for Will Hoge, Asylum Street Spankers, South Austin Jug band, and a sweet Pearl Jam tribute band called "Evenflow".  Just part of our summer full of tribute bands...they seem to be getting more and more popular.  We've got a radiohead thing lined up in May, Pearl Jam and Metallica in June, Guns and Roses in July, Poison in August - lots of tributes.

OK, I gotta run now.  Promise to write something more interesting later.  OMG, I forgot to ask how YOU are doing...

OCT 4, 2005 - HOW DO YOU GET A PODCAST??

You may have noticed a link to a "Podcast" on our homepage.  If you aren't hip to all of the new internet lingo, a "Podcast" is the next big thing that everyone is doing.  It's a little like a blog, except that it is an audio feed that you subscribe to and listen to on your computer or mp3 player.  How do you "get" the Sticky Fingerz Podcast?  It's easy easy easy, man.  Just follow these simple steps and you'll be listening in no time.

1) go to www.ipodder.org

2) scroll down to the link "Download Ipodder".  click it.  If you have trouble finding it, it's on the RIGHT side of the page

3) click your operating system - most of you are Windows, so click the little "Windows" folder

4) click "ipodder 1.0".  it's the very first item in the list

5) you should have three options for download in the middle of the screen.  Windows, Mac, Linux.  Pick the one that matches your operating system.

6) choose any of the download mirror buttons on the right side of the screen.  you should probably choose one from the good ol' U.S.of A., but I'm not sure if it matters

7) save and install the program once it is downloaded

8) run ipodder from your desktop

9) from your "podcast receiver" screen, click the green circle with a "+" sign in the middle.  this is how you add podcasts.

10) in the URL space, paste the URL link that you have copied from our homepage where it says "copy this address into your podcast application"

11) click the green button that has two arrows in different directions, this should begin the download of the "Chicken Scratch" podcast.

it's just that easy.  and all 11 steps will take you maybe 5 minutes or so.  totally worth it.  enjoy.

7 - 31 - 05

I really like the band My Chemical Romance.  They get me excited about hard rock the way that Nirvana and Jan's Addiction used to get me excited.  If you like it loud and fast and really really good, then pick up Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge.  Me?  I'm hoping to get to see them this fall with Alkaline Trio and Reggie & the Full Effect.

Last week I made the trip over to Mempho to catch the one and only Carole King (wish I could think of something clever to say about how different her music is from My Chemical Romance, but it's early Sunday morning down here at the Finger and I'm not quite up to speed until the coffee machine kicks on)

Back to Carole King...her string of hits songs read like a top 10 list of hits from the 60's and early 70's...

I Feel the Earth Move - destroyed by Prince protege Martika

You Make Me Feel (Like a Natural Woman) - made famous by the queen of soul,

Locomotion - best version, Billy Squier; 2nd best, Carole King; 3rd best, Kylie Minogue

It's Too Late (Baby) - such a sad break up song.  something inside has died and i/can't hide and I just can't fake it

One Fine Day - the carpenters back when they were getting 3 squares

Will you still Love me Tomorrow - hey, this chick had a lot of break up songs

You've got a Friend - yes, James Taylor gets all the credit

Some Kind of Wonderful - a bad john huges movie, a great grand funk song,

Jazzman - she didn't play it, and I never really liked it anyway.

Take Good Care of My Baby - I

and the immortal So Far Away...doesn't anybody stay in one place anymore, it would be so fine to see your face at my door.

She dedicated this one to "the troops", but every time I hear it I think of all the folks I've met through the years at JR's and Stickyz...people just passing through the time of their life and making a big impression on mine.

I've been reading Chuck Klosterman's new book, "Killing Yourself to Live', and all I can say is.  If you happen to be a 30something year old dude that loves music and grew up somewhere in midAmerica: buy it, read it, love it.  This guy grew up in Fargo, ND and now he writes for Esquire and Spin.  In the book, he tells the story of getting sent by the editors of Spin magazine to drive cross-country and make note of places involved in rock'n'roll tragedies.  Throughout, he waxes nostalgic on everything from Radiohead's prediction of 9/11 on Kid A, to the philosophical differences between "Slow Ride" by Foghat and "Free Ride" by the "most successful albino key-tar player", Edgar Winter.  The last time that I read a novel that felt like it was written by me at this particular time in my life was 15 years ago when I read Douglas Coupland's Generation X.  This is a great book - I'm still some 50 pages from the end, it could all go to hell before I'm finished.

Let's talk about Sticky Fingerz for a minute.  Consider this a publice service announcement...September will be a badass month for cool shows.  I'll say more about it later.

Tomorrow is August 1st.  For some reason, this day holds a particular meaning to me.  Back when I was a lot younger...4th or 5th grade.  I remember sitting outside of the hotel room with my cousin (we were on vacation, and had been at Six Flags all day), and we were thinking - "today's August first.  Summer is practically over just as soon as it began.  school is about to start and things will be different than they have been"...of course, now I realize that Summer lasts pretty much until mid-November since I'm not going to school and my seasons are dictated by the degree of heat.  August 1st...it still always creeps up.

7 - 25 - 05

We got the call late Saturday (7/23) afternoon that Patrick Smith had a family tragedy and would not be able to make the show on 7/30.  Our prayers go out to Patrick and his parent's during this difficult time.  We will definitely let everyone know when Patrick will be coming back to town.

7-17-05

I just got back from a little road trip to  Memphis for the Duran Duran concert.  On my way there, I was thinking about the 6 c.d.'s that I had loaded into my trunk changer for the drive over.  I've decided that every road trip should have musical representatives in 6 categories:

1 classic disc

2 classic disc that I never got around to getting into, but I feel like I should give it a try

3 greatest hits compilation of a band that has good singles

4 something very hip that I'm curious about

5 new hotness of the week

6 something that just rocks

So, I had...

1 - Radiohead "OK Computer" - What a classic, and "Let Down" was playing as I drove in over the Mississippi River...you just can't plan moments like that.

2 - The Replacements "Let It Be" - I never listened to The 'Mats that much.  And, I probably shouldn't be so cool to call them The 'Mats until I listen to them some more...

3 - No Doubt "Greatest Hits" - sure love that "Spiderwebs"

4 - Reggie and the Full Effect "Songs Not to Get Married To" - yes, I'm a believer in the Full Effect...there are some awesome songs on this disc, and a few that rock me a little too loudly...sounds a little like Failure or Trent Reznor at times, but with a sense of humor.  Reggie is a member of The Get Up Kids.

5 - The Redwalls "De Nova" - a few weeks ago I was thinking that the new Spoon album sounded a lot John Lennon...scratch that.  The Redwalls bring the Lennon side of Lennon/McCartney with a sound that is fresh and classic at the same time.  This is a hot record, and these guys may be bonafide rock stars a year from now.

6 - The Distillers "Coral Fang" - lead singer Brody Armstrong is easily the cutest girl that I can think of who could beat the hell out of Courtney Love (even Courtney on "medication").

Duran Duran rocked the Orpheum theater.  They played most of the hits that you can think of EXCEPT...

Reflex - which happens to be my favorite DD song and video

New Moon on Monday - whose video featured a flag & symbol that I have forever doodled on pieces of paper when other people think I may be taking important notes

Is There Something I Should Know - whose video has inspired me to always ALWAYS own more than one denim button down shirt

You've got to understand - for most of my Junior High School years, I wanted to be Simon Le Bon and I wanted to dress like John Taylor.  It was so much fun to get to see the whole original band together and sounding AWESOME.  My only complaint is that I had to run to the facilities when they played New Religion, and that was probably more of my fault than theirs.  Simon still had it together, and I could easily imagine he and Bill Shatner and Leonardo DiCap all being part of the same weird family...

After the show I ran over to Jillians to catch the last 4 rounds of the big fight.  What a great day for our City and State to have a Champ like Jermain Taylor.  He's been a couple of times recently, and you can bet that the next time is on the house...all though he did just get PAID, so maybe I should rethink that one.

On the way back, I listened to Mitch Hedberg's "Strategic Grill Locations"  Mitch makes me laugh so much.  I'll bet the cars I passed probably thought I was crazy the way I was laughing so hard.  Also, I listened to more Radiohead.  Not only is "OK Computer" a classic,  but the "kick in" of Paranoid Android is one of my favorite rock moments..."you don't remember, you don't remember, why don't you remember my name".

7-04-05

here's a list of places that I can safely wear my red, white and blue Converse BESIDES 4th of July.

3) Veteren's Day

7) Springsteen concert

8) Liberty Bell tour of Philadelphia

9) Post office

10) around my house

7 - 3 - 05 (LIVE 8 EDITION)

20 years ago on a hot July afternoon, I sat through some 10 hours of television called Live Aid.  My parent's probably  thought I was crazy to spend a perfectly good summer afternoon glued to the MTV (note: MTV used to KICK ASS), and I distinctly remember my grandparent's coming over for dinner that night, but I wouldn't let anyone change the channel.  It was the biggest concert ever.  To me at least.  From Run-DMC and Tears for Fears in the morning, all the way through to Queen and Led Zep and Duran Duran and Mick Jagger ripping up "State of Shock" with Tina Turner and Power Station with no Robert Palmer (WTF?).  Anyway, I stuck with it for some reason...

FLASH FORWARD to a mild mannered career as concert promoter.

How in the world did they pull off Live 8 in the short amount of time that everyone knew about it?

I've been listening to Live 8 for almost 24 hours straight.  I think I've absorbed as much as I can for now.  I've been tuned into the whole affair on XM/VH1/ABC.  Luckily Xm has repeated the show in it's entirety at least once.  I woke up at 7am this morning (let's hear it for red bull) to the Pink Floyd finale...what a show.  With all due respect to the "DJ's" on XM, that must be an easy gig to get...

Here's my high/low lights:

Paul McCartney.  He opened and closed the London stage.  Opening with Bono and some Sgt Peppers-dressed flugalhornists, they played, naturally, "Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band"...it was 20 years ago today.

McCartney closed out the show with George Michael on "Drive My Car" and later an all star cast ripped through "Hey Jude".  Hey, isn't this the same show that the media all called "boring" when it was halftime at last year's Super Bowl??  Well, it wasn't boring to me then, and it's not boring now either.  The guys from Pink Floyd are all cuddled up with the children's choir "from Africa".  It's all pretty cozy.

PInk Floyd.  The original Radiohead plays together for the first time in forever and it sounds like they never went away.  OK, to the absolute purist, there were a couple of mis-timings and one clunker bass note, but c'mon.  I can't think of anything in recent rock 'n' roll memory that was as momentous and satisfying (please remember that rock'n'roll memory has no short term).  there may be no hope at all for a tour, but wouldn't it be cool if they did just a handful of shows.  How much would I pay to see Pink Floyd?  $500.  In the right place.  And if you're goin' with me you gotta get your own ticket.

Madonna.  Got into the groove.  Please tell me the last time that anyone heard Madonna sing?  Besides her slickly produced album, almost every performance I've seen in (ahem) recent rock'n'roll memory has been lip-sync'd.  No safety ropes at Live 8.  Madonna has never been known to have a great voice, but she got up there and did some numbers in her lower range.  Sounded just fine.  Wish she would've done "Holiday" like she did at the original.

Annie Lennox.  Much better pipes than Madonna.

Sting.  Does 3 Police songs.  Here's my sample fan mail, feel free to cut and paste and send to "da-doo-doo-doo.com" Dear Sting, stop teasing.  just put the band back together and take your tantric ass on a world tour pronto.

UB40 - The XM announcer says "the thing about Live 8 is that everyone only gets a few minutes to perform.  If you're a band like UB40, with so many hits, what do you play?  Do you play Red Red Wine?"  What?  They had more than one hit??  Oh, you mean that Elvis cover that was from the Billy Baldwin/Sharon Stone classic "Sliver"?  Of course, they're gonna play "Red Red Wine", but thanks for making it suspenseful XM.

XM Announcers.  This was the best part.  They could hear all of the stages and could switch between their channels or whatever, but a lot of times you heard them talking, trying to figure out who was playing what and where.  The one guy actually goes "and, well, who is THAT playing "Good Vibrations"?  One of the things about this show is you hear some strang cover song choices.  Earlier today we heard Travis play "Stayin' Alive", but now we've got (ha ha) someone doing "Good Vibrations", we'll have to check on that"  Excuse me.  Mr. XMDJ.  Could it possibly be that Brian Wilson, the songwriter of "Good Vibrations" and original Beach Boy who's lifestory has been written about in any music magazine ever, is playing at one of the Live8's???  Of course, but they never came back on to say it.

Crosby, Stills & Nash.  Speaking of old timers not getting any love.  I heard a great interview with Graham Nash bitching about CS&N not getting to play.  They were in Germany already, but the organizers of the event couldn't tell them exactly where their 8 minute slot would be, and the band had other obligations 200 miles away that night.  "Don't tell me that you don't have 8 minutes for Crosby, Stills and Nash to support your cause!!"

Gordon Lightfoot.  Nice to hear him again.  I went and downloaded "If you Could Just Read My Mind" after his performance.

Joss Stone.  Everybody always talks about how great Joss Stone is.  She's even better live.  Maybe it's 'cuz she don't wear shoes.

Jars of Clay Interview.  "We're most excited about playing here today with the Rolling Stones"  Dudes, the Stones aren't going to be there...but you should totally be thankful that you guys are even on this thing.

Green Day.  Love 'em.  Billy Joe dressed in the coolest shirt ever (and looking just a bit like der Fuhrer) leading the Berlin faithful through American Idiot and Holiday before totally killing with We Are the Champions. I can't wait to get this performance on DVD.

Mariah Carey.  Introduces her back up singers as "the childrens choir from Africa".  I'm sure that backstage they were like "this is the children's choir from Mozambique" or "Swaziland" or "whereever", and after a few practices it was decided "you know what, Mariah, just say they're from Africa"

Barenaked Ladies.  Proof that I don't understand everything Canadian.

The Killers.  Becoming better and better.

Coldplay.  I Still don't get it.  Even with Gyneth and Apple looking on, it didn't do anything for me until...Richard Ashcroft!  Are you kidding me.  Coldplay is cool enough to play back up to the "Bittersweet Symphony"...man, that one brings back some memories.

Velvet Revolver.  Seedy American Metal at it's best.  These guys are the only band from that 80's Los Angeles metal sound that matters anymore.

Stevie Wonder.  "Everyone's feelin' pretty.  It's HOTTERRRR than July"  begins the timeless "Master Blaster" which kicked off the Stevie set.  This is a song that will forever be linked to my childhood and playing Atari with my Dad.  Hearing Stevie rip through this like it was "20 years ago today" brought the whole thing back around to me.

Now, all that being said, I think the whole deal was kind of a waste.  They were asking for awareness instead of money, but...with that many people watching, there was probably a whole lot of money that could have been given.  And, I can't imagine that the leaders of the G8 gave these concerts any more thought than they do Bonnaroo, or Woodstock, anything else.

Gotta go now.  I've got 9 hours of footage tivo'd, and I want to rewatch anything that I missed.

6 - 28 - 05

This isn't so much a Sticky Stuff update as it is a point of information about a recently published article...

Sticky Fingerz building has not been sold.  Contrary to whatever has been reported recently - it is our neighbor's building (with the Flying Fish restaurant) that has been sold.  The article was so well-written that one would have to assume that facts were checked out prior to publishing.  Let this be a lesson - don't believe everything that you read.

ps.  If for some reason you mistakenly thought that Sticky Fingerz had been sold, and that you missed a golden opportunity - then get out your checkbook and give us a call.  EVERYTHING has a price!! :)

6 - 12 - 05

I've been too gone for too long.  Thanks to everyone who has berated me with the ol' "how come no new sticky stuff"...here goes a little stream-of-consciousness for ya (Ms. Strange at Hall High would be so proud of that literary ref...and I never really read Joyce's "Portrait of an Artist"):

Hmmm...where to begin...anyone going to Memphis to see Duran Duran?  I'm so pumped about this.  Last time I saw them was like 1987 at Six Flags of all places.  I ran into John Taylor and his model of a wifey...what was her name??  She was a big deal back in '87...man, I just can't remember.  Anyway, they were just hanging by one of the rides a couple of hours before the show.  I so bad wanted to say "John Taylor, I drove my parents crazy trying to find a leather trenchcoat like the one you wore at Live Aid.  Where do you shop?"  I've kind of got a habit of striking up bizarre conversations with the celebs (ask me about taking a leak with David Copperfield).  Anyway..the highlight of the show was bumrushing the front of the stage and getting sooo close.  This young girl next to me asked me to throw her stuffed teddy bear onstage...I nailed Simon in the leg. whoohoo.  I'm a good shot.  Almost the best throw ever...2nd only to pegging David Lee Roth in the shoulder with a T-shirt that he wrapped around his neck for the encore of the Eat 'Em and Smile Tour (that show will forever be responsible for any hearing loss I've had through the years)

Damn...Tyson lost last night.  I sure was pulling for him to make that big comeback.  This looks like a bad week for icons of my generation.  No more Tyson.  Chances are no more Michael Jackson (I really stopped being a fan around the first time I heard Bad's opening verse, "Your butt is mine".  Um, no it's not, Michael.)  It's still sad to see either of these guys go down the way they have.  You can only understand if you grew up in the 80's.  Tyson fights were EVENTS, man.  MJ videos were HUGE DEALS.  Of course, this was back when MTV played videos (I know you kids have no idea what I'm talking about).  How many hours did I practice that freakin' moonwalk??  For the record, my Thriller-era girlfriend had all 4 walls in her bedroom plastered top-to-bottom with pics and magazine photos of Michael.  Now that I think about it, that was kind of creepy (but it did inspire my own "bedroom photo wall" of Madonna - thanks for being cool, Mom and Dad).

Here's where I change the subject from my adolescence.  Do you think it'll ever rain again?  Just curious.

I finally got around to watching DIG the other night.  What a great film that is.  I mean, if you are looking for a down and dirty story about what really happens with bands trying to nail that record deal, this is it.  Now I've got to go out and buy some Brian Jonestown Massacre records.  I'll tell you this, I know 3 or 4 guys just like every character in that movie.  It ain't pretty, ya'll.

Coldplay - love 'em or hate 'em?  I borrowed the first record, and didn't like it.  Never heard the 2nd disc, but actually went out and bought the 3rd.  Am I ready for this...not sure.  It seems that everyone either loves them or hates them.  I've always had the opinion that they were Radiohead-lite.  The only problem is, my faith in Radiohead is waning.  So, what d'ya do?  "OK Computer" was such an IMPORTANT album to me.  Who can fill that void??????

Dave Matthews Band  - love 'em or hate 'em?  I've haven't bought a Dave record since "Under the Table and Dreaming".  That was at least 10 years ago, b/c It was when I caught them 4 days OK City bombing...in downtown OK City (VERY moving performance).  Big Head Todd gave me a high five.  Small club, great show...then Dave took over the world and it became less interesting to me.  Solidified by a Memphis in May performance a few years back where there were at least 1 million people between me and the stage.  I can't say that I "get it", but I do appreciate the popularity.  Anyway, I bought the new record after hearing Dave describe it as "love and sex".  Well, that sounds happy.  I'll report on it later.

Note to anyone who wants to know why we haven't put on any shows in the amphitheater this summer:  Hope you enjoy Raiders of the Lost Ark in the park on June 22, b/c that bumped us out of our first big ol' concert production.  Snakes, why does it always have to be snakes...

Have you seen the trainwreck of a show called "Hit Me Baby One More Time?"  You won't be able to look away.  First, the five ol' skool acts play one of their hits (first ep: Loverboy, Flock of Seagulls, Arrested Development, Tiffany, Cece Penniston), then they wheel them back out to play a cover song.  Excuse me, Tiffany's hit WAS A FREAKIN' COVER SONG...nobody seemed to mention that.  So, the "winner' gets $20,000 donated to their favorite charity...um, I think any of those cats would like for their charity to be the Loverboy, Flock of Seagulls, Arrested Development, Tiffany, or the Cece Penniston Foundation.  With all due respect, the Arrested Development take on Los Lonely Boy's "Heaven" should immedaitely be released to radio - it was badass.  Not to be confused with Fatass, which would seem to describe Mike Reno of Loverboy...Their next album should be called "Get Lucky...and a large order of fries and a shake" - that's kind of a stretch b/c I'm not sure if a) anyone really ever reads this, and b) if anyone really remembers how big Loverboy was in 1981.  Well, they are even BIGGER now. HA!

This is the part of the blog where I say Go Cubs.  (and, I must point out, that Wrigley Field is my happy place - not including the beaches of Nice, France, which is not only happy, but in French)

Thanks to my friend Cranford for turning me on to The Art Brut..."and, yes, this is my singing voice, it's not irony, it's not rock'n'roll, I'm just talking to the kids"

I can't tell you how much I love rock'n'roll lyrics.  It is the poetry of our age.  Seriously, I can study Keats all day long, but when I say "You take the midnight subway train/you're calling all the shots/you're struck by lightnin'/YOU'RE IN LOVE"...ok, that was RATT, and maybe a bad example, but if you crank it up, it sounds AWESOME.

Are you hip to Luna?  I got on the bandwagon of their mellow pop right when they broke up.  Man, I'm always showing up late to the party.  Do yourself a favor and download "Rendezvous" - any record with a song called "Cindy Tastes of Barbeque" is a classic in my book.

I've officially lost all faith in most of the hiphop that I've heard in the last 5 years.  Except for anything released by DefJux or the Jurrassic Five or Atmosphere - is all of the rest of it just a blueprint for the decline of the western civilization, or is it just me getting old?  Oh, I liked some of that Kanye West album, but I'm totally through with "bitches and ho's" lyrics at this point, ya know?  Hey HipHop People, it's so funny that you continue to rhyme "bacardi" and "party".  Don't get me wrong, I'll bump NWA all day long, but they were the originators, and I think all the others are suffering from, um, arrested development.  If I may, "Crusin' down the street in my 6-4/jockin' the bitches/slappin the ho's/went to the park to get the scoop/knuckleheads out there cold shootin' some hoop" -  that was poetry, that was 1989.  Can we move on now?

Here's something worth repeating - if you have the means, then don't blink an eye, and pay whatever you must to see U2.  All thought, you may want to use discretion before dropping $90 (Yikes!) for their vintage tour shirts.

I've always wanted to go to Red Rocks for a concert.  White Stripes in late August - can I get designated driver?

I just read that PINK FLOYD will reunite for Live 8 in a couple of weeks.  All original members.  I can't think of the last time music made me damn near hyper-ventilate.  That's just the most awesome thing ever.  If only I could figure out how to score tickets I would definitely throw caution (and Sticky Biznass) to the wind and jump across the pond...maybe eBay has my miracle.

Ok, enough about me.  Sticky Fingerz 5th anniversary is right around the corner.  The fastest 5 years of my life.  Keep an eye on the site for more info.

5 - 19 - 05

everytime I sit down to update the sticky stuff, I end up doing something else...hmm.  maybe I wasn't meant to be a blogger.  anyway, here's what's up lately...

I went to Chicago last week and got a chance to see U2 at the United Center.  It was Bono's birthday.  They were filming their Live DVD the night I was there.  I say this as nonchalantly as possible b/c the whole experience was so unbelievable that I could never do it justice in a few sentences.  All I can say is, do anything you can to see U2, preferably on this tour.  You'll be hard pressed to ever find another act of their caliber doing it the way they do...4 guys onstage...3 chords and the truth, baby.

Looking forward to seeing Of Montreal tonight.  They are getting pretty good reviews in all of the cool magazines...looks like we've got them here at the right time.  We sure have had a lot of phone calls from passionate fans trying to make sure they can get tickets.  This may be one of those special shows...

Man, I hope this new Star Wars movie doesn't suck.  Their are somethings from my childhood that I would like to remember as the best ever...Star Wars falls into this category.  I hate to see it go out sucking.

Got a copy of the new Spookie Daly Pride disc.  These guys are hilarious.  They even give Little Rock a shout out in their new song "The Bumpin' Uglies Song".  Check 'em out next week on May 25.

5 - 1 - 05

May Day.  This is one holiday that gets completely overlooked.  I'm really not even sure if it's a real holiday, or some sort of "rhyming holiday".  Actually, it's supposed to be the radical workers holiday from the late-1800's in England.  Whatever.  The rap community should really get behind it.

Crazy week last week with all those shows.  Thanks to everyone who showed up and made it such a success.  Would you believe that Ozomatli won a BillBoard Magazine Latin Music Award for Best Alternative Rock Album the same night that they were playing here??  It was actually broadacast live on Telemundo moments before the guys hit the stage at Sticky Fingerz...how cool is that.

I just saw the lineup for this summer's Zooma tour...interesting.  I'm really not a big "Trey" fan, but I would totally go to see Ben Harper, G Love, Ray LaMontagne, Medeski, the Black Keys and Gomez...count me in.

Speaking of The Black Keys, I hear they did a short set at Midtown last week.  Totally sorry that I missed that one.

Is anyone going to Lollapalooza this year?  They've shortened it from a tour down to one glorious weekend in my favorite Windy City.  I'm still undecided.  All though, the fact that the Cubbies are in town the day after definitely sweetens the pot.  I would like to catch Beck, though.  His new album (while not my favorite) has some definite highlights.

(speaking of the cubbies, I know it's already looking like a bad year, so we don't have to "tiptoe" around the issue)

I just read that Rick Rubin is producing the new Dixie Chicks album.  Wow.  That may turn out to be the biggest country record ever.  In the studio, Rubin is one of the most dangerous men alive.  From "LL Cool J is Hard as Hell" to his work with the Chili Peppers and Johnny Cash, this dude has consistently made the best albums of any genre.

Speaking of the Dixie Chicks...Mrs. Emily Robison has just delivered twins Henry and Julianna.  Way to go, Charlie!!

4 - 24 - 05

Now that the month's almost over, I thought I would give a report about what's been up.  But first, we've got an incredible week of entertainment coming up, so please check out the music page (even better, make sure you are on our email list)

Had a great time hanging out with Jim from Sparta a few weeks ago.  Totally nice guy, and eager to talk about whatever (his old band, At the Drive In being a favorite of mine, it was cool to hear some inside scoop about how the band broke up, etc)

Also met another cool Jim...Bianco.  This guy from L.A. is a class act songwriter.  As a matter of fact, I'm listening to his record "handsome devil" right now.  It's always satisfying to accidentally trip over a killer artist with which you are unfamiliar.  The critics compare him to Tom Waits, and the similarities are there, but this guy is a little less, um, frightening...But, let me tell you his songs are outtasite.  My favorite is the slow grind " Goodness Gracious"  Opening lines..."Goodness Gracious, Spaghetti straps upon a marinara dress.  Stiletto heels and a cross across your chest"  Now that, my friends, is poetry!

Speaking of badass songs.  I've just downloaded new stuff by Ryan Adams and the White Stripes.  Here's my short review...RA - returns to a sound that made Whiskeytown famous.  This one gives me huge hopes for his next record (he's putting out 3 this year).  WS - Hey, who put Prince in my White Stripes?  Tell me that Jack's falsetto throughout this crunchy number filled with big 70's-style riffs wouldn't sound right at home on a purple record.  You can go ahead and spend $.99 each on these songs without wasting a dollar.

Some friends in N.L.R. have just created an interesting idea.  It's called The Hive, and they offer everything from art classes (pottery, too!) and music lessons to a full audio recording studio with mastering facility.  It's on the Trolley route, so you should check it out sometime...especially if you are a musician in need of sticks and strings in the downtown area.

Got a chance to see Loretta Lynn last night in Tunica, MS.  What a trip she is.  She doesn't mind having conversations with everyone in the band throughout her show.  It's almost like a comedy that happens to star the queen of country music.  MUCH better than that dreadful "Reba" that I watched once in it's entirety only because I had the stomach flu so bad I couldn't roll over to grab the remote.  Loretta did some singin' in between the storytellin' and it was (to quote Billy Ocean) "simply awesome".

(side note - gambling action in Tunica...not so good)

I'm still glued to American Idol every week, and I've learned to say that with no shame.  At least, I've learned to type it with no shame b/c it's not like anyone ever reads this anyway.  Of course, I know that little Carrie Underwood from Oklahoma is a L-O-C-K to win it all, but I'm pulling for constantine more and more each week.  Somehow, he seems to be the only one getting better each week.  I'm still down with Scott Savol, too.  No way in the world he's going to win, but I'm surprised every week that he stays alive.

Man, Ozomatli is finally going to be here this week.  I'm so pumped for this show.  These guys are so much fun, I have expectations that it could be the best show to ever play here (so far).  I'm that serious about it.  It starts at 8pm with The Fundamentals...Ozo will go on at 9:15.  It's got to be an early deal b/c they have to be in Memphis early the next day for Memphis in May.  If we're lucky, we'll get a conga line.  It happens at some Ozomatli shows that they conga right out the door and down the street at the end of the show.  It started a riot in Austin last year during South by Southwest.  I can't wait!!

Speaking of doing things down the street...we are involved with all of our neighbors here in the River market for the first annual Running of the Bars which will take place on the night of Cinco de Mayo.  Keep an eye out for info on this crazy idea we had (note to authority figures, not a good idea to let all of the bar owners in the river market get together to plan big parties...absenteeism at work the following day could impact the local economy)

We've had a few staff changes lately at Sticky Fingerz (and we're hiring a few more friendly faces this week), so come on down and meet all your new best friends.

I imagine that most of you know about this week already, but it's truly filled with night after night of great entertainment.  If we keep doing shows at this rate, we're going to have to open another place!!

My buddy Scott finally got to go to Wrigley Field the other day...and it rained.  Dude, what did I tell you about buying those tickets on eBay??  Welcome to the disappointment that befalls anyone who even THINKS about becoming a cubby.

On April First I mentioned that I hadn't been April fooled (so far).  Then I read that day that Mitch Hedberg had died.  Man, that really sucks.  I think he made me laugh harder than anyone else in recent years.  On a trip to Chicago with Maxey last year, we listened to Hedberg's c.d.'s over and over.  If you aren't familiar with him, then take the time to grab either of his discs.  They are brilliantly funny to me.  What a loss.

4 - 1 - 05

So far, I've made it through half the day with no April Fools' - I'll keep you posted on how it turns out.

Here's what I've been up to lately...

got a chacne to make it to South By Southwest Music Conference in Austin a couple of weeks ago.  Check out the next issue of Nightflying Magazine for my full report (Thanks, Peter), but here are the highlights -

Louis XIV - gotta be my favorite new band this year.

Hot Hot Heat - It's been a long time since I've seen a live act that captivating.

LCD Soundsystem - the line was so long for this show, there was no way I could get in

Speaking of lines - it was waaaay overcrowded this year. What's up with that SXSW?

Death from Above, 1979 - kind of disappointed in these guys.

Billy Idol - totally rocked.  I want more, more, more.

Hopefully, those of you on the mailing list will receive our next newsletter in your mailbox soon.  If you haven't signed up yet, make sure to send us your info...some times we even send out free c.d.'s and stuff.  Here's the address again to get hooked up saywhat@stickyfingerz.com

3 - 15 - 05

Ok, I gotta make this one quick, b/c I've got a lot to do around here before I take off for SXSW...

First of all...I gotta say I love Arby's.  You wanna know why?  Potato Cakes.

I saw a hilarious video on atomfilms.com today.  If you're a 50 Cent fan, then check out the the leader of the free world rapping "D-R-A-F-T".  Definitely worth your time...bitch.

The Troubled Hubble show last night was certainly entertaining.  They just got word that their new record will come out in May on the prestigious LOOKOUT! Records label.  Unfortunately, as I had not promised, Hockey Night pulled an NHL and cancelled last minute.  I tried to get them to the bargaining table, but they insisted their brakes went out in Oklahoma.

(note to the band Hockey Night.  Maybe your brakes did go out in Oklahoma..but, another band used that EXACT same excuse just last month so, I'm not buying it.  Consider yourselves in my penalty box)

Did anyone Tape Al Green on Letterman last night??  I sure would like to see that.  All though, you would think I'd seen enough of the good Reverend after the ol' XYZ incident at Riverfest last year...

I officially get way too much spam.  thinking of changing my email address to unsubscribe@stickyfingerz.com.

What's up with American Idol??  I'll tell ya...Mario Vasquez is far too talented to sign a record deal with those losers.  Did you know that whoever "wins" American Idol is locked into a 7 year management deal with the producer of the show?  Same goes for the other finalists.  My guess is that Mario has got another offer on the table...he's that good.

You know, that Michael Jackson is one freaky dude.  And to think, the Easter Bunny brought me the Thriller album back in 1983.

I've just filled out the most excellent basketball bracket ever.  Wake Forest, Baby!!

Has anyone peeked at the Riverfest lineup?  I know nothing is official, but the folks at Pollstar.com have leaked a few names already...Black Crowes, BB King, Hank Jr, Rose Hill Drive.  Yep, the same Rose Hill Drive that blew the roof off of this place a few weeks back.

OK, I gotta split.  Keep on Rockin' in the Free World!

Chris King

3 - 8 - 5

My friend Smokin' Dave Garrett sent me a link to this website that has to be the funniest thing I've heard this week.

http://www.thewebshite.net/nickelback.htm

The most ridiculous thing is that I've been telling folks for a while that I couldn't tell a difference from one Nickelback song to another.  Oh yeah, if you are in your office...CRANK IT UP.  Everyone loves to hear a couple of Nickelback songs rockin' together in sterereo...

Is there anything prettier than all of the dogwood trees that sprout around here this time of year?  Check 'em out on your way downtown around the Dilliards HQ on Cantrell...rolling down your windows, opening the sunroof, and taking your top off may be in order.  (only encouraging top removal for those with convertibles or really tinted windows)

Thanks to all ya'll that ralled out to see Shooter Jennings earlier tonight.  A great time with a nice crowd of fun people...that's why we do what we do!!  In case you wonder, Shooter is a good dude, and he's just been asked to open all three months of Toby Keith's Summer Tour (permission granted to leave the show after Shooter and before Toby)  Also, you can catch him doing 2 nights at Stubbs BBQ next week with a fella named Willie Nelson.  If I have to tell you where Stubbs is, then I probably have to explain who Willie is, and I just don't have time for that right now.

My apologies to anyone who tried to get Tim Reynold's Tickets on Monday at www.ticketalternative.com...the bug is out of their system, and the tickets are priced at $12.

I've been so busy lately, that I haven't had a chance to make a big deal out of a couple of April shows that just got confirmed for us.  I'm totally pumped up about both of these...

SPARTA - MONDAY APRIL 4TH - ALL AGES

OZOMATLI - THURSDAY APRIL 28TH

Sparta is a spinoff of the hugely successful "At the Drive-In" that imploded moments before impact with superstardom back in 2001.  This is a rock show.  Rock rock rock rock.  Got it?

Last time I saw Ozomatli, they were being interviewed by Joan Rivers on the red carpet after picking up their first Grammy award a few weeks ago.  Ozomatli plays a kind of latin-flavored funk that makes even the most un-dancin'est of people shake it (for example, me).  This could be the most fun you'll have all Spring.

3 - 7 - 5

Here's a few things I feel like talking about...

LCD Soundsystem has just put out the funkiest dance rock album in years.  Stack it right next to Beck's Odelay, The Beastie's Paul's Boutique, and the last Basement Jaxx record.  You want my review..."Freakin' Awesome - 5 fingerz"

Did anyone get to see Aqueduct on Conan a few days ago?  These guys were here the first weekend in February and they played circles around a (disappointing) Starlight Mints.

I was in Best Buy the other day and heard them playing Blue Merle.  After a quick inventory of the 50 or so people in the store, I realized that there were exactly 2 1/2 times as many people randomly in Best Buy hearing the band as opposed to the small crowd of 20 that paid to see them at Sticky Fingerz last summer...hmmm, maybe I should just open up a record store.

Speaking of records, hopefully a few of you got a chance to listen to the Sticky Fingerz music sampler that went out in the mail a week ago.  If you didn't get that disc, and you didn't get the newsletter, and you didn't get an invite to our customer appreciation party back in January - then maybe it's time to get on our mailing list, no?  Just email me your info, and we'll take care of you.  You'll want to do it soon, b/c we have a special deal happening at the end of this month, and folks on our mailing list will hear about it first.

I lead a strange (but entertaining) lifestyle with weirdo hours.  So, after years of denial, I finally decided to make the plunge.  Yep, I got Tivo.  Now, when I get home at 2 or 3 in the morning I've got new options besides hitting the sack or dominating XBox Live...American Idol and Suvivor.  Lucky for me that I've never been able to keep up with these shows in the past, but now...I just gotta know what happens to the little tattooed bartender on Survivor:Palau.  And on Idol...does anyone not think that Mario Vasquez is going to win this thing by a landslide??  BTW, please keep this our little secret.  If anyone else knew I was losing sleep trying to pick a favorite between the 16 year old that acts like Bette Midler and Okie Carrie Underwood I would surely be the laughingstock of the live music community!!  But, while we're on the subject, I'm betting the farm on Constantine getting the boot this week.

Last week, I spent most of my time at the annual Bar and Nightclub Owners convention in Las Vegas.  There were some 40,000 bar and nightclub owners in attendance, and we were all looking for one thing...to steal the other guy's ideas!!  If there's one thing I'll remember more than anything else about the trip (besides my friend Allison swallowing fire at the Jack Daniels party in front of a couple of hundred Los Angeles hipster-types) it's always get to the Vegas airport an hour and a half early.

I'm totally bummed that I haven't gotten to see Duran Duran on their reunion tour this year.  Can't imagine that the 5 original members will ever go out and do it again

The last time I posted about the Grammy's, a few folks got in touch to ask how in the world I could not book a show with the Black Eyed Peas.  Here's the story...it was May of 2001, and we had finally gotten a show with bluegrass big shots Big Smith.  The agent for the BEP's called and wanted the same date.  Dilemma.  Both shows were going to be big for us, but I was pretty sure that the BEP show was a one time only deal...they were already too big of an act to be playing rooms this size.  So, we held up our agreement with Big Smith, who we were sure we would be able to bring back every few months for years to come.  That's how it goes down sometimes.

Calling all you Roots Rock/ Americana/ Country Rock fans...we've got a special night for you.  Starting Tuesday March 8th, it's ROOTS IN THE ROCK every Tuesday.  We're kicking things off with Shooter Jennings with special guests John Lefler and Justin Morgan at 8pm.  The best part is, thanks to our friends at Jack Daniels and Fat Tire, we're able to keep the cover charge at a very affordable $5.  That's less than it costs to see the Million Dollar Baby at the Rave, ya'll.

LOVE LIVE MUSIC - CK

2 - 19 - 05

What a weird week it's been...

First of all, thanks to everyone who showed up for our Redneck's, Longnecks, and the Opposite Sex party on Valentine's Day.  We were blown away by the turnout, and it looked like all ya'll had a great time.  Keep an eye out on the Music page for the return of Wade Bowen and The Randy Rogers Band.  Both of those acts will be back soon...

...Sooner than you think, actually.  Randy Rogers Band will return with Charlie Robison on Feb 23rd.  What a great double bill that's gonna be!  Charlie has a song getting played on CMT now, and Randy has the #46 Country song in Billboard Magazine.

I went and saw Wilco last Saturday night in Memphis.  While it was technically an excellent show - I was disappointed with Jeff Tweedy's setlist.  I realize that crying over this is equal to anyone who ever left a Gourds song wishing they had played "Gin and Juice"...it just happens sometimes.

What doesn't happen very often is a cancellation.  We are lucky enough to deal with a lot of touring acts that need a gig in Little Rock to get them from point A to point C.  So, most of these road warriors are good about making there show with no problems.  Of course, accidents/illnesses/riots/acts of god, etc, do happen from time to time.

This week, we had 3 in a row.  No kiddin'.  I've never had 2 days fall out in a row before, but this week it happened 3 times.

Alligator Dave called Tuesday at 6:30pm to say that he was stuck in Houston for some reason.  That's sooo alligator dave - he didn't tell me what her name was, but you can ask him next time you see him playing anywhere else except here :)

The Lloyd Dobler Effect called at 1pm on Wednesday to tell me they had car trouble in Minneapolis the night before, and would be unable to make it.

And the kicker, Nation called Thursday afternoon at 2:30 to say that Stacy Savage was so sick it would be silly to try and pull off the show.  This one was the most disappointing b/c it has been a long time since our friends in Nation have played here.

Anyway - that's the story on cancellations.  They are really rare for us, but then you have a crazy week like this.

Did anyone happen to catch the Grammy's on Sunday?  By the sounds of the Neilsen Ratings, not too many people were watching.  I thought it was one of the better awards shows I have seen in recent years.  In case you missed it, here's my rundown of how it went down -

- the opening mash-up sequence with Black Eyed Peas, Franz Ferdinand, Maroon 5, Los Lonely Boys, and Gwen Stephani all playing their songs at the same time reminded me of what the inside of my head sounds like ALL OF THE TIME.

- wait a minute...I've TURNED DOWN shows with Los Lonely Boys and Black Eyed Peas.  yikes.  Can't win 'em all...

- a lot has been made about Gwen Stephani performing pantless.  How come nobody has mentioned that she was wearing Seinfeld's puffy shirt?

- In a night of awesome acts, Alicia Keys gave the performance of the night, but Green Day and Melissa Ethridge rocked the house, too.

- Jerry Lee Lewis was awarded a lifetime achievement award...and he still owes me 3 grand.

- J Lo and Mark Antony...I didn't understand a word.

- The southern rock special was a low point for everyone involved (except maybe Elvin Bishop).  This one is way too obvious to joke about.  So...

 - What was up with Tim McGraw.  Didn't he get the memo that folks are pretty much looking down on LipSynchers these days?  Good thing he had Faith Hill fooled.  That had to be the saddest part of the show.  Faith Hill gives a one person standing ovation to her husband after he provides the night's biggest WTF moment.

 - a bunch of people sang a song about the tsunami "We are the World"-style.  It was rough, but their heart was in the right place.  Al Green was a big M.I.A. after he was announced at the show's beginning to be a part of the tribute.  Bad Reverend.</
